ART: Hernan Bas at Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin
Contemporary American artist Hernan Bas exhibits a collection of paintings depicting a solitary figure lost within turbulent and abstracted landscapes. Bas produces large canvases with bold, visible brush strokes showing landscapes that verge on the sublime, with their menacing skies and majestic grey mountains. In each of these charged landscapes is a lone and contemplative man who is, by contrast, depicted in finer detail, giving the impression that he is still amidst the energy of the surrounding nature and implying perhaps that the landscape could be an Edvard Munch-like rendering of the figure’s thoughts. The title of the show, ‘Considering Henry’, is a reference to 19th-century author Henry David Thoreau, who wrote his novel Walden or Life in the Woods in an isolated cabin lost within a forest in Massachusetts.
