Gumball 3000 Rally
This year the celebrity urban car rally (described by Vanity Fair as ‘the most rock ‘n’ roll car rally ever staged’) will start in London at noon on Mon 26 May, before zooming through the streets of Paris on the same day, and finishing in Istanbul 8 days later, after stops, and parties, in Barcelona, Monaco, Venice, Belgrade and Sofia. Participants include David ‘The Hoff’ Hasselhoff, Cypress Hill’s DJ Muggs, or the French footballer Djibril Cissé, who each pay £25,000 for the privilege. The rally takes place on public roads with 120 competing cars, usually exotic sports cars, including this year Pagani Zondas, Bugatti Veyrons, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Rolls Royces, Bentleys, Aston Martins, Jaguars, Porsches, Morgans and several Lotus’, and over 20 eco and concept electric cars. There’s no prizes for coming first, with organisers insisting it’s an ‘adventure’ rather than a race. The event combines automobiles with music, film, and entertainment, closing the streets in each city to create a Gumball festival. In Paris, the action will be centered around Colette, in front of which you’ll see a showcase of the most jaw-dropping futuristic cars and supercars.
