Keep Portland Weird
Portland, Oregon, cradle of American underground music, comes to Paris, Metz and Nantes in a ten-day takeover combining indie revolt and environmental activism. From tomorrow La Gaîté Lyrique welcomes Portland’s non-conformist spirit for 5 evenings of concerts: carte blanche goes to local musicians Stephen Malkmus and Tara Jane O’Neil, Slimkid3 (formerly of The Pharcyde) stars in a “Portland Groove” hip-hop night, an invitation from Portland music festival MusicfestNW and to finish up there’ll be the Glass Candy club special programmed by the Portland Institute of Contemporary Art. Also note, Experimental ½ hour, the Channel 22 cable TV collaborative programme showcasing the Portland avant garde will be broadcast in Paris for the first time throughout the week. Plus there’s graphics from Crash America, one of the city’s prominent studios. There’s also a show programmed at the Centre Pompidou on Fri 27 with Holcombe Waller, Vanessa Renwick, and Cascadia Ensemble (performance with Tara Jane O’Neil, Lisa Schonberg, Rachel Blumberg and Tender Forever).
